Our Zoo Experience

Wow! Kansas City Zoo is AWESOME! Steve and I visited the Kansas City Zoo October xix-21 of 2017. It took us one full 24-hour interval at the zoo, merely nosotros should accept divide it into two days.

Kansas City Zoo Scenic

Nosotros got to the zoo before the zoo opened. It opens at ix:thirty am and closes at 4 pm. When I say it was a full mean solar day I mean we had to hustle a bit at the end of the day to finish seeing everything.

Kansas City Zoo Entrance

The zoo is divided into ii main sections. The front section is made upward of the Kidzone, Tiger Trail (Asia), and Commonwealth of australia.

At that place are also a couple of exhibits at the entrance of the zoo. These include the Polar Bears, the Penguin Building, and the River Otters.

Welcome to Kenya Bridge

The 2nd section of the zoo is fabricated up of Westward Africa and East Africa. This also includes an African Elephant surface area along with a Tropics edifice located between the two master sections of the zoo.

The zoo sits on 202 acres. Now not all of that is open to the public, however, if you visit I suggest yous article of clothing good walking shoes. Equally I said above nosotros should have made the visit to the zoo over ii days.

Allow me share with you how we trekked through the zoo. The first thing we did when we got into the zoo was headed straight back to Africa.

In that location is this behemothic bridge y'all have to cross to become to Africa.

Welcome to Kenya Bridge

They have congenital Africa where you pretty much have to exist at the finish of the bridge in Africa before you lot even see anything. In Africa, you can get left or right to first your trek around a huge loop.

Giraffe Statue Kenya Africa

We chose to go right, and I'm glad nosotros did. The commencement species habitat we came to was the Cheetah habitat.

Cheetah

The zoo has three Chetah brothers. Did you know a group of Chetah is called a Coalition?

Cheetah

Female person Cheetah are usually lone while related males will stay together. The three boys were upward and moving effectually.

They were amazing to watch. The zoo has set up a boardwalk which runs alongside the habitats. At that place are also covered viewing windows for visitors to get an upwards shut encounter with the animals at nigh of the habitats.

We stayed a expert viii-ten minutes with the Cheetah. One Chetah was walking alongside the glass, and so we were able to encounter every astonishing feature of the Cheetah.

Cheetah

Some other of the brothers was walking the perimeter of their habitat to brand sure there were no intruders and everything was safe.

The next run across you will come to is Warthogs. They were not as active, they were curled upwards together taking their mid-morning nap. They did have a very prissy habitat with a pocket-sized creek to wallow in on hot days.

Warthogs

Afterwards the Warthogs we came upon the African Savanna exhibit. Hither you tin can walk out on an observation deck overlooking the African Savanna and the animals that phone call the Savanna dwelling house.

African Plains

The ascertainment deck is seated out over a watering hole. The zoo has rocking chairs and a covered deck for visitors to relax while watching the animals on the African Savanna.

Covered Viewing & Rocking Chairs Overlook African Savanna

The animals on the Savanna this 24-hour interval were Addax, Springbok, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Eland, Greater Kudu, Ostrich, Giraffe, and Zebra. Information technology was very nice to take a moment and enjoy the view.

Lesser Kudu

Before we went any further into E Africa we decided to go ahead and visit West Africa.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park

After the African Savanna viewing, instead of continuing left, follow the path straight. Y'all will cantankerous a bridge, it is a really cool swinging rope bridge.

West Africa Bridge

In one case inside West Africa nosotros went correct at the fork. The first species you will run into are Black Mangabey (blazon of monkey).

Black Mangabey

Side by side is the gorgeous African Leopard. Pound for pound, leopards have one of the most powerful bites of all the large cats. The habitat for the African Leopard was actually neat and something I take never seen before.

African Spotted Leopared Habitat

There is a path you follow, on either side of the path is the Leopards enclosure. The Leopard can motion from one side of the enclosure to the other by traveling above y'all.

As you brand your way past the African Leopard habitat you will encounter more species that phone call W Africa abode. These species include Bongo, Duiker (pocket-size deer), Cerise River Hogs, and Lowland Gorillas.

Red River Hogs

To see a Bongo upwards close was really not bad. Bongo are institute in the dumbo jungles of Africa, they are very shy and rarely seen. The only time nosotros have seen them at other zoos, is from afar.

Bongo

In the Gorilla habitat, there was a huge Silverback Gorilla sitting on a big rock as we walked up. He was cool, later on we showed him respect, he didn't heed that we were in that location and laid downward.

Western Lowland Gorilla

Here are some tips on how to show respect to Gorillas:

  1. Never look directly at them, stand slightly sideways with your chin lowered. This is especially true if you are an adult male.
  2. Never prove your teeth in a smile. This is a threat towards them.
  3. Talk softly. Their hearing is as good as or better than ours. So screaming and pounding on the glass isn't nice.

Ok, nosotros left Westward Africa, traveled back across the swinging bridge, and turned right to get back on the trail to East Africa.

Kenya Trail

The side by side species you will encounter are the Ravens and Vultures. Then you will come upon a few species of Tortoise.

Vulture

The next species down the trail is Steve'south favorite (after Meerkats, of course), Kirk'southward Dik-Dik. I know how information technology sounds and I know what you're thinking. Finish it.

Kirk's Dik-Dik

Anyway, Kirk'southward Dik-Dik are one of several pocket-size deer species. They are incredibly cute. When frightened, they make a whistling sound through their olfactory organ that sounds similar "zik-zik" or "dik-dik", from which its common name was derived.

Inside the African Aviary, are of course Birds of Africa, just there is too the most laid back, sunbathing Red Ruffed Lemur. Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, an island off the e coast of Africa.

Birds of Africa Aviary

This little guy was kicked back lounging on a log as if it were a lounge chair and soaking up the rays. Ridiculously cute as can be.

Red Ruffed Lemur

Afterward moving on down the trail, we entered a Kopje. Kopje is a term given to a large group of rocks predators and prey utilise to survey their surroundings.

Kopje

Animals such as Stone Hyrax, Lions, and Caracal use Kopje to scan their territory.

The beginning species you lot meet is the Caracal. The Caracal is a small species of cat, but don't let their size fool you. They are extremely successful hunters. They accept the power to leap very loftier and catch birds out of the air.

Right of Caracal were Fennec Fox and Bat-eared Play a trick on.

Bat-eared Fox

Left and across from the fox habitats are the African Lions. The zoo has iii beautiful female African Lions. The three lionesses were laying in the sun and relaxing without a care in the world.

African Lioness

Their habitat is very well suited for them. The way the habitat is built for them is; if they wanted to exist seen by visitors they could lay out in the open up, only if they are feeling a piffling shy on a item day, they could hide behind a hill at the peak of the habitat.

African Lioness

The day we were visiting they had chosen to do half and half. I all the same got some great pictures.

Down and across from the Lions, is species of cat called the Black-footed Cat (they are highly endangered).

Black-footed Cat

Adjacent to the Black-footed Cat is the most adorable of the small-scale cats, the Sand True cat. This cutie pie had only think on her listen and that was nap!

Sand Cat

The last habitat in the Kopje is the Stone Hyrax. The Stone Hyrax shares their habitat with not but African Birds merely too with a cadger.

Rock Hyrax

Co-dwelling house is when zoos will have more than one type of species in the same habitat.

We exited the Kopje and continued on downwards the trail to the Black Rhino. The Rhino was not impressed with the day and was napping in the sun.

Black Rhino

Exercise you know ane difference betwixt a Black and White Rhino? The White Rhino is called the White Rhino because of his wide upper lip. When the English misunderstood the German word for "wide" as "white" the proper name stuck.

To tell the Black Rhino apart from the White Rhino, look at their upper lip as well. They have a more pronounced point to their upper lip.

At the Rhino habitat we took a right and the trail atomic number 82 us to the Chimpanzees. Nosotros went inside the Chimp edifice but did not encounter whatever of the Chimps through the viewing windows.

We stayed in the building for a bit reading and looking at all the pedagogy provided about the Chimpanzee there at the zoo. Once we finished nosotros exited the building and headed back out on the trail.

The trail followed forth the Chimp habitat for a bit, and then Steve noticed a Chimpanzee coming out of the trees and brush. And so another, then another, and and so on.

Turns out the entire troop, several times during the twenty-four hour period, volition walk their territory to make certain no intruders take breached the perimeter. We happened to catch them equally they were coming back from a scout.

We left the Chimpanzees and walked downwards the trail where nosotros came to the Crocodile Research Station on the Nairobi Wildlife Reserve. Inside is a Slender-snouted Crocodile in his pond.

There is a mural on the wall inside the building showing the difference in size of a few different species of Crocodilian. Information technology is astonishing to compare your size to some of the largest Crocodilian in the world. You lot all of a sudden feel very small.

Crocodile Educational Mural

We moved on and encountered ane of Africa's deadliest species, the River Hippopotamus. More people are attacked and killed past Hippos every yr than any other species in Africa.

Hippos are notoriously territorial. This Hippo was in her puddle playing with i of her pool toys. She was pushing it around under water and biting it.

Nile River Hippo Habitat

Later you leave the Hippo habitat y'all will trek a proficient distance around a rather big pond before entering the Ruwenzori Isle Reserve in Republic of uganda.

Welcome Ruwenzori Island Reserve Uganda

Here y'all will meet a pack of African Painted Dogs and a troop of Baboons.

African Painted Dogs

The trails in this office of the zoo are very peaceful and beautiful.

Guinea Baboon Habitat

Once we hiked dorsum across the river we saturday and had lunch at Rafiki'southward Restaurant.

Steve had a Hamburger and French Fries (of course), and I had African inspired Chicken Kabobs. Nosotros besides learned a bit of Swahili.

Rafiki's Restaurant

There is a sign on a colonnade nether a picnic seating expanse exterior the restaurant. On the sign are dissimilar phrases in Swahili. Jambo (hello) and Habari (how are you?) are a couple of the phrases nosotros learned.

English-Kiswahili Translation Signage

I don't really know how Steve did it, but after tiffin, he got me to ride the Skyfari with him. If yous don't know what this is, just think ski elevator without the snow.

Skyfari Over African Savanna

This Skyfari goes from Rafiki'due south Restaurant over the African Savanna to the other end nearly the Chimpanzees.

I'thou scared of heights, I know I'm a pansy, I did enjoy the Skyfari a picayune bit. I likewise got some keen photos. I really enjoyed being on the ground a footling more though.

Skyfari Over African Savnna Watering Hole

You tin can make a one mode trip or a circular trip on the Skyfari. Once we returned to Rafiki's Restaurant nosotros hopped on the Tram and took it dorsum across the big span to the front of the zoo.

The Tram volition accept you around a bit of the Elephant habitat, still, for a actually good view I would recommend walking back to information technology.

The Tram runs all mean solar day between the entrance of the zoo and Africa. It will as well accept yous to Asia and Australia in instance information technology is too far for you to walk. The number of trams running depends on how busy the zoo is that day.

We decided to get off at the Bounding main Lions. This allowed united states of america to walk back over to the African Elephants. Nosotros walked over to the Elephant watering hole and saw the beautiful African Elephants.

African Elephant Watering Hole

There are bathrooms located in this area of the zoo. The thing I actually liked was they built the bathrooms to resemble African village huts with thatched roofs and mud walls.

African Elephant Overlook & African Village Restrooms

There were also huge rocks placed around the watering hole in a bleacher similar way for visitors to sit and heed to Keeper Talks. You lot tin can also sit and relax there while watching the Elephants.

African Elephant

Afterward visiting with the Elephants for a bit we walked back toward the entrance simply turned left on Beaks and Feet Street. Here forth the path/route the zoo has a few different species.

Hither y'all tin encounter species such as Bobcat, Tamarins, Iguana, and an Hawkeye Owl.

Bobcat

Next you can walk upwardly the trail dorsum toward the Tropics Building.

Tropics Building

Within the Tropics building you lot will come across River Otters, Tamarins, Gibbons, Prehensile-tail Porcupine, and a few other African and South American species.

Golden Lion Tamarin

Something I thought was super absurd, there is a table which has a agglomeration of Petroglyphs carved into a stone slab. You can place a brown paper towel on tiptop of the glyphs, employ a pencil to rub over the paper towel and glyphs making a rub of the glyph.

Petroglyphs

Leaving the Tropics building nosotros decided information technology was Penguin time. The Helzberg Penguin Plaza is equipped to handle, what Steve and I call, Hot Penguins (any species of Penguin non found in Antarctica) and Cold Penguins (just 5 specie live in Antarctica).

Penguin Building

The African Blackness-footed Penguins are able to go in or outside, dependent upon the temperature outside. African Blackness-footed Penguins are found in South Africa.

The King, Gentoo, and Southern Rockhopper Penguins are in a temperature controlled room with their ain snowfall auto and a cold, deep pool they tin can swim in.

At that place was a Rex Penguin laying directly nether the snow car. The snowfall was falling on superlative of him to the point where it was starting to bury him. It was super cute.

King Penguin

There are three levels to the Arctic Penguin habitat. The farther yous walk around and downwards the walkway, the more you get under the surface of the water. You can see nether the water of their puddle through big viewing windows.

On our mode to the Tiger Trail and Australia we stopped by the Discovery Befouled to see Steve's all-time favorite species, Meerkats!

Meerkat

In the Discovery Barn is where the Meerkat and Ringtail Lemur habitats are. The Meerkats were soaking up as much sun coming through the windows every bit they could.

Meerkat Faceplant

On to the Tiger Trails! You lot volition trek a pretty good distance. Once downwards the hill, winding through the paths, and past the happy Buddha, the first Asian species you volition see is the Orangutan.

Steve & Budda

This habitat is super neat with 2 stories of viewing. This is really cool considering if the Orangutan is up on peak of her jungle gym, you lot tin still be mostly centre level with her from the upper viewing area.

Orangutan Habitat

Adjacent we made a bee line for the Red Panda habitat. No matter the day I've had, you show me a Crimson Panda and I'm going to smile. Did you lot know Ruby Pandas aren't pandas at all? They are actually related to the Raccoon.

Red Panda

Afterwards the Reddish Panda we round the corner and I am stopped in my tracks. Straight in forepart of me are two of the well-nigh beautiful Sumatran Tigers I've always seen. For a few moments me and 1 of the tigers lock eyes. I am speechless.

They were both laying facing the visitors viewing area. Laying completely still with the near intense stare. Then one of the males got up and decided to testify off his stripes.

Sumatran Tiger

Sentinel out, sometimes tigers like to spray toward people. It is their style of maxim this is my surface area, stay out! If you always see a tiger turn its butt toward you and elevator their tail, my advice, back away quickly.

Commonwealth of australia has some of the most unique animals in the world. Did you know, all but i species of Marsupial live in Australia?

We started our walkabout off right, we went through an Australian Aviary. In the aviary yous volition meet Commonwealth of australia'south largest bird, the Emu. Did you know Emu eggs are a night light-green colour?

Australian Aviary

One animal we had not seen before in other zoo trips, is the Dingo. I saw my first Dingo at the Kansas City Zoo!

Dingo

I snapped a few photos of the adorable tiny Wallaby and rounded out that section of the Commonwealth of australia exhibit with a visit to a Matschie's Tree Kangaroo. The Matschie's Tree Kangaroo is totally arboreal.

As you round the last corner before you exit the Australian showroom, y'all will come across a sassy Camel.

So, we were walking forth and came upwardly to the Camel habitat, and of course Steve says "Hey, I wonder how many times a day he hears, "Hump Day", probably a lot, huh?"

Dromedary Camel

Anyway, this Camel mean mugs us all the way out of Australia.

I thing I would like to mention, the Red Kangaroos in the zoos Australia exhibit are completely gratis roaming.

In that location are about iii mobs of Red Kangaroos. The Kangaroos hop effectually where always they desire. Information technology is very unlikely, however, that they would intentionally hurt anyone unless provoked by some idiot.

Gray Kangaroo Mob

Once nosotros walked through the Australian Herpetarium and finished our walkabout we headed for the Polar Bears and River Otters at the entrance of the zoo.

Unfortunately, we did non go to run into the Polar Acquit, yet, his habitat is super awesome and very enriching. The Polar Bear has a huge puddle, a waterfall, and lots of big rocks to play on and hide backside.

Polor Bear Passage Statue & Habitat

There is a viewing area inside the edifice where yous can sit on bleachers and listen to Keeper Talks. At that place is too nearly 180 degrees of viewing area outside.

The North American River Otters also have a super cool habitat. They were very agile too. We were continuing on the dry (or land) side, one of the Otters was on the dry side. The other Otter kept getting in and out of their pond. He was also yelling at the Otter on the dry side. I think he was yelling for him to come and play.

North American River Otter

We watched them for a couple more minutes, then went to the gift shop. In the aforementioned building and connected to the gift store are some concessions and a restaurant. We purchased our magnet and decided to call it a twenty-four hour period.

Similar I stated in the beginning of this story, we should have visited the zoo in a 2 day period.

Kansas Urban center Zoo is super awesome, I promise we tin visit once more someday soon.
